The Millennium Summit held at United Nations in September 2000 was the most recent in a series of global conferences calling attention to the gaps between the developed, developing, and transition economies. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and their accompanying targets originate from the Millennium Declaration signed by 189 countries, including 147 heads of state, adopted at the Millennium Summit. These goals, and the time-bound targets and quantified indicators that accompany them, are instruments for addressing the worlds most important development challenges.
The MDG targets can be drawn on the reporting framework for EU member states, second-wave candidates or possible future candidates pertaining to issues of access and inequality (particularly the EUs Social Inclusion Agenda), as well as other national policies and frameworks. This knowledge website intends to increase awareness about the links between the MDGs and the EUs Social Policy, as well as assisting other countries in preparing MDG reports and disaggregated data collection.
